Hunt for spectacular and powerful castles in Germany

Even though there are many castles around the world, there’s no better location for castle hunting than Germany. Throughout the country, you can find twelve thousand of them, making it a bit of a needle in a haystack situation to find your next castle to hunt down, but we managed to narrow it down to three, and well, it was an adventure of a lifetime.

In this post, we’re going to take you along our journey of castle hunting in Germany, so if any of these are on your bucket list, you’ll know exactly what you’re in for!

Burgau Castle

We started our trip off with Burgau Castle (also called Schloss Burgau in the area). This castle is extremely unique. It’s a water castle, built in the 14th century. The Counts von Heinsberg built the castle and assigned it to the fiefdom of Wilhelm von Burgau. Unlike most castles that are on solid ground, this one’s on a 50-meter diameter island. It has undergone several renovations since 1675 and today is an artistic marvel in itself. One of the best things about this castle is that you can take a little hike through the neighborhood that leads up to the castle itself, making the whole experience that much more immersive and special experience!

Burg Nideggen

No castle hunting adventure is complete without making your way to a medieval castle, now would it? That’s exactly why the next spot on our list was Burg Nideggen! This one was built in 1177 to be the home to the Counts of Jülich. Even though this castle has seen its fair share of violence from the 1500s to the 1900s, it was restored in 1902 to its full glory and today is one of the most beautiful and interesting castles one can visit! There’s even a museum inside that adults and children would really enjoy! If that wasn’t enough, the way up to the castle is one of the most beautiful, scenic drives you’d ever go on. We went through the entire tour and then stayed to watch the sunset, and let’s just say it’ll be hard to top this sunset anywhere else.

Cochem Castle

Cochem Castle isn’t just great because of its grand scale and unique design, it’s great because of all it’s been through and what it is today! This castle was built in 1,000 AD, but saw several owners throughout the years. It even saw two centuries of ruins before being restored back to its full glory. Today, it sits on top of a hill, overlooking the colorful buildings below. We especially enjoyed the forest drive up to the castle location, which just made the entire trip feel even more special.
